Car Stereos: Missing stock amp, jeep grand cherokee, infinity gold

Question
Hi, I just bought a 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. It has the infinity gold sound system in it. The stock amp is missing out of the vehicle and I want to install a head unit, subs and an aftermarket amp. Does the stock amp need to be replaced?

Answer
Hi Cody,

No, you don't need to replace the stock amplifier when installing a new head unit.  You can bypass the amplifier at the amp location.  This is done by locating the wires that carry the audio signal from the head unit, and connecting them directly to the output wires that run to the speakers.  In this way, you can power the front and rear door speakers directly from the new head unit; you'll need to leave the dash tweeters disconnected, or purchase in-line crossover filters so you're not sending any deep bass to them.  You'll probably want to plan on replacing the front door speakers as well; if you pick up a decent 2-way or 3-way door speaker, you won't miss the dash tweeters.

Here's the wiring colors.  Each input wire should be connected directly to the matching output wire, at the amp location.

Input wires (located in the larger plug at the amplifier)

left front (+)  dark green/orange
left front (-)  brown/red
right front (+) violet
right front (-) dark blue/pink
left rear (+) white/dark green
left rear (-) dark green/white
right rear (+) dark blue/white
right rear (-) dark blue/orange

Output wires (smaller plug at amp)

left front (+) light green/red
left front (-) light green/dark green
right front (+) light blue/red
right front (-) light blue/black
left rear (+) dark green/white
left rear (-) white/dark green
right rear (+) white/violet
right rear (-) tan/dark green

left dash (+) yellow/red
left dash (-) yellow/black
right dash (+) orange/red
right dash (-) orange/gray

Hope this helps!
