Car Stereos: Amp & Sub help, watts rms, hyundai accent

Question
QUESTION: I've been thinking of buying a Jbl 7001e and Kicker DCVR12. Would these be suitable?

ANSWER: Hi Kevin,

I think these two products would match up very well, provided you buy the 2-ohm version of the DCVR12.  The sub box is available as a 4-ohm system or a 2-ohm system; the ohm rating should be printed at the speaker terminal.  If you use the GTO 7001E amplifier with a 2-ohm sub system, it can produce 700 watts RMS, which matches very well with the subwoofers' 800 RMS power rating.  If you get the 4-ohm version of the DCVR12, though, the amplifier can only produce around 350 watts.  This would work, but wouldn't be as good a match.

Hope this helps!

Brian

Follow-up:  I don't have any personal experience with the Comp VX speaker, but if you're looking for the maximum possible bass output and don't mind losing the cargo room, I think you'll get more output from the dual subwoofer setup than a single box.  However, if you're just looking for a good, balanced bass response for musical listening, then there's really no reason for a double box--I'd use the single 12" subwoofer system in this case.

QUESTION: Dear Brian,

Considering the cargo space of my hyundai accent era (crdi 2007 select), I've decided to load a 4 ohm CVX12(DVC) to my trunk. I found it at a very cheap price but I gotta enclose it myself. The question is what kind of a box should I use? I listen to club kinda music. I think it isn't a sealed one but just a ported one. And It doesn't matter if I'll have to use a box as large as dcrvs need (I don't want to be trying to protect two subs rather than one - pushes/luggage touches etc.). What are the specs of a box i should use? Thank you for your precious time, effort and help... Kevin.

Answer
Hi Kevin,

I apologize for the extended time it took me to get to your question; I'm afraid you caught me at a pretty busy period.

In designing a box for your CompVX, your best resource is the subwoofer's owner's manual.  The manual actually includes some simple designs for either a sealed or ported enclosure.  If you intend to build the box yourself, you'll find a sealed design to be a much simpler job.  If you decide to use a ported box, you'll definitely want to build it yourself or have one custom-made.  Don't try to use a pre-fabricated "universal" ported box with this sub.

In your place, I'd probably be looking at a 1.75 to 2.0 cubic foot, ported box design.  I think that would give you the best overall performance for your musical preference, if you're willing to take on the extra complexity of a slot-ported design.  Otherwise, you might consider a 1.0 to 1.5 cubic-foot sealed box design.

Hope this helps!

Brian
