Car Stereos: Installing aftermarket radio., double din head unit, factory radio

Question
I have a Clk-430 mercedes Benz and i want to get a new radio for my car. I prefer a 2din radio just because it provides more of a cleaner look for the car. However i know nothing about installing radios myself so i need advise. I understand if i can not get a 2din radio for the car just because of wireing etc. What type of price range can i expect for a full-installation of this head-unit+wiring for Ipod hook up. I am lookin in the price range of under 500 dollars. I would like to have working head unit,+ speakers+ subs. I dont know if this is to much to ask, from what i have been told is that my car will not run a 2din, but i figure to ask the experts. So please give me some feedback. Also would u make some suggestions about radios that would go well with my car. Thank you.

PS. suggest a retailer that would do this as well?

Answer
Hi Tony,

Sorry about the delay in answering this question.

I haven't personally worked on one of these cars, and the information I could find was pretty limited.  It looks like your vehicle may be equipped with a single-DIN factory radio, with a pocket underneath.  In this case, a double-DIN head unit would probably fit, but you'd need to remove the pocket; and it's possible that you'd need to modify the dash opening somewhat.

Unless you're looking specifically for a mobile video or in-dash navigation unit, I think a single-DIN deck might be your best bet.  A standard single-DIN would be the same size as your factory radio, and should look fine.

There is a very wide range of after-market head units that include provisions for iPod, and it should be pretty easy to buy one and have it installed for under $500.  Replacing your front and rear speakers with after-market upgrades should be possible as well, but if you want to add a subwoofer, you'll need to buy and install an amplifier as well; this would probably strain your budget.

I can't really recommend a particular retailer, especially as I don't know your location.  For a simple deck and speaker installation, any reputable car audio installer should do; one of the national chain stores, or a good local shop, would be fine.  If you decide to go with a double-DIN head unit, I'd take it to an independent local shop that specializes in custom work, and let them have a look at the car before they take on the job.  The installers should be able to recommend a selection of head units and speakers that will fit your vehicle and give you the features you want.

Hope this helps!
