Car Stereos: car stereo install, antenna cable, power antenna

Question
QUESTION: Well i was installing my friends deck to his 00 celica, and i was trying to get the power antenna to work. The pioneer deck didn't have a power antenna wire so i was trying to get the voltage somewhere else and in doing so i touched this thing that looked like an antenna cable to the red remote wire of the deck. It then made the stereo turn off immideately. Right away i thought it was the radio fuse in the car, but i checked it and it was fine, i then thought it was the fuse on the stereo, but that fuse was good as well. I then thought the stereo had burned out but when i attach the remote wire to the constant yellow wire it turns on just fine. I checked to see if there was any breaks in the wire but everything was fine. The antenna wire was tethered to the regular antenna cable and i don't know what its for or what it does. So if you can shed some light on my dilemma i would really appreciate it. Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Adrian,

The Celica has another radio fuse inside the dash up near the steering column.  You'll have to get underneath it and possibly remove the change tray to get at it.

The power antenna in the celica needs 12V to get AM reception.  Hook up the antenna regularly, and the wire beside it can go to your deck's remote output.

QUESTION: Man that is really good to know, but i have one more question about the wire that's tethered to the antenna cable. Should i splice the end off and hook it up, because it has a RCA looking tip on it, or do you mean that the blue cable off the wiring harness adapter should be hooked up to the remote cable so that every time the stereo is on the antenna will go up. Which is what i tried to do until i touched the other antenna looking thing to the red wire. Thanks for the info i really appreciate it, thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Adrian,

No, don't cut that rca looking wire.  That's the actual antenna, and should not be touched.  The slightest damage to it will ruin reception.

The wire alongside it should have a little black plastic clip.  That's the wire you want to send 12V to from the deck.

QUESTION: Well thats the thing i can tell which one is the real antenna ive done many installs, its just that the other wire looks like a smaller version of the antenna cable.

Answer
There should only be one wire that looks anything like an antenna wire (and it should plug straight into an aftermarket deck.)

The other wire that goes with it is a standard copper wire.  Make sure whatever else you're seeing isn't the hvac recirc kick out wire or anything.
