Car Stereos: installing new radio in a 2004 chevy silverado, clock numbers, chevy silverado

Question
I have a 2004 chevy silverado 2500HD. I installed a new JVC radio as the directions stated. The radio does not come on. It acts like it isn't getting power, but, when you push the "display" button, the face lights up with the clock numbers and display lights. Is the theftlock system preventing the radio from turning on?

Answer
Rodney,  On some newer vehicles, radios are wired through the car's computer.  The computer checks with the radio if it needs power, then it sends the power to turn on.  I don't get the meaning or logic behind this type of wiring, but I know it takes some special wiring.  Some vehicles, you can buy a wiring harness adapter that has an electronic "key" wired into it, so the switched wire works.  Or, you can use a standard wiring adapter, but you have to run a switched power wire from somewhere under the steering column.  I only use the electronic adapters.  That sounds like the problem you are experiencing.  Also, some cars may have more than one type of BUS interface adapter available, and the one you have may not be the right one.  If your truck does have a switched wire in it's wiring harness (and it must be checked to see if it has power while key is turned on), either the wire is not connected properly or securely; or something is wrong with the radio.  I would double check the wiring adapter, and that should fix your problem.  Hope this helps, Scott
