Car Stereos: Car Stereo, market radio, loose connection

Question
QUESTION: I recently replaced the alternator on my 98 for ranger. A couple days later the radio stopped working. It cut in and out for a few seconds at a time for a couple hours but now it simply hasn't worked in days. I've replaced all the fuses associated with radio from my owners manual. Not sure what to do next.

ANSWER: Martin, I wonder if your new alternator has a bad regulator in it.  That means it is charging at more than 14 or 15 volts.  If so, your electronics will be getting fried.  I would definitely have it checked asap.  If it is working properly, it may just be a coincidence that your radio quit working just after the swap.  I would replace the stereo with an aftermarket one with the features you are looking for.  Hope this helps, Scott

QUESTION: Is it possible that there is a loose connection somewhere and that is why the radio sputtered on and off for a bit? If so, where would I look to find it? If I buy an after market radio, is there anything I should be looking for to make sure it's easy to install?

Answer
You can check the connections behind the radio, but with Ford radios, the short is usually inside the radio.  You might be able to wiggle the wires to get the radio to work, but it will just shut off when you hit another bump.  As for easy installation, I would suggest going to Crutchfield.com .  They are reasonably priced and they supply all the gear you need for the installation for free.  Good Luck, Scott
