Car Stereos: 1996 GMC Car Stereo, blinking red light, gmc car

Question
Audio system will suddenly stop working.  Which is typically preceded by a
loud popping sound followed by this red light indicator button, near the
volume control, blinking on and off.  The system then goes totally dead.  The
owners manual doesn't have any information on the purpose of this red light.
The audio system will begin working perfectly again, though, if the battery
has been discharged down, such as, when a light is left accidently on.
Working for a while before going through the same process as described
above.  Only to work again the next time the battery has been discharged
down.

Answer
Hi Nick,

That's a really weird issue.  My guess would be that it is losing one of its two power sources (decks have 1 constant, which is used to remember radio settings, stations, etc, and 1 accessory, which is used to power the unit when the car is on, so you can't turn it on when the car is off..)

The pop you're likely hearing is the sound of the electrical jolt of the wire connection severing.

And the blinking red light my guess would be the 'anti-theft' light that is nothing more than a blinking light that doesn't do anything, because it thinks it's lost power on the accessory, but the constant is still there.
