Car Stereos: No sound!!!, chrysler sebring coupe, chrysler sebring

Question
Hi, my name is Adrian, & i have a 01 Chrysler Sebring Coupe LXi. I installed new boss speakers front & rear & a new stereo in it, everything looks in place except when i turn it on there's no sound coming out of my speakers, front & rear. But when i put back the stock stereo it plays perfect. i read a little about the harness used for installing a new stereo with this car, that it wont work with amplified JBL or premium sound systems. I really need help on fixing this problem.

Answer
Hi Adrian,

It's possible to use the standard harness with the Infinity amplified system in your Sebring, but you may not want to do so.  When you've installed an after-market head unit and after-market speakers in a vehicle with a factory premium audio system, it's almost always better to bypass the factory amplifier than to integrate it.  That means that your best option is to connect the new speakers directly to the new head unit, instead of letting them run from the stock amplifier.

Here's how to turn on the factory amp in your system:  there should be a blue wire in the adapter harness you're using.  Connect this wire to the blue/white wire on the back of the after-market head unit.  That should get your sound working, but you'll probably find that your new front door speakers only play bass.  That's because of the built-in crossover system in the factory Infinity amplifier in a Sebring.

To bypass the amplifier, you'll need to locate it first.  It might be hanging underneath the rear deck in the trunk; or it might be located under the passenger front seat.   Unplug the factory amp.

There will be a number of wires in the factory amp plug.  Eight of the wires are currently connected to your head unit's speaker outputs.  Twelve (or possibly fourteen) of the wires are output wires, running to the stock speaker locations.  To bypass the amp, you need to take the wires coming from your new head unit's speaker outputs, and connect them directly to the wires running to your new speakers.

Go back to your head unit wiring, and identify each of the speaker output wires.  Find the factory wire color for each speaker wire, and write it down.  Then go back to each of your new speakers, and write down the factory wire colors there.   With this information, you should be able to match the correct wires in the factory amp plug.  Match them up and connect them, and you'll have your four new speakers connected directly to the head unit.  (Note that your dash tweeters and center speaker will stop working--these are the extra speaker output wires at the amp.  If you've used a decent 2-way or 3-way speaker set in the doors, then you probably won't miss the dash speakers).

Hope this helps!
