Car Stereos: need help on installing system in F-250, ford f 250, ford lightning

Question
Hey Justin! Have a 2005 King Ranch Ford F-250 Crew Cab, and i would like to
put a new system in it. I dont have great door speakers so i would like to
replace them. I also want a lot of bass so i want a subwoofer too. I have this
particular subwoofer in mind. The woofers RMS watts is 100 and i want to
know what wattage of door speakers i should aim for and the wattage of amp
i would need for a very equal balance. I also would like to know where i
should place the subwoofer and the amp. Im not very educated in this area so
you might have to speak to me like i am a five year old... Thanks

Answer
Hi Jack,

With a crew cab, people have been known to put the subwoofer in a small box underneath the front seats.  It allows you not to lose any useable space in the truck, and still get the boom you want.

You could put the amp underneath the other front seat.

Other options are to mount them inside the cab in the back somewhere.

I've also done an install in a Ford Lightning where we mounted the amps and the subs (8 of them) into the truck bed, but that took up a LOT of room.

If the woofer you're buying is 100RMS, you can buy speakers anywhere around there.. 50-100RMS and pair them up with a 300-400 watt or so 4 channel amplifier.  Bridge two of the channels and run that to the sub, and then run the other two channels to each of the front speakers.

The wattage doesn't have to match up, just set the gain and the volume such that they give the boom you want, sound the way you want, and don't sound distorted or smell like burning.

FWIW, music is mixed so that the high, mid, and low end are all at the same volume, contrary to what most kids in their Honda Civic would have you believe.
