Car Stereos: Good Yukon XL sound system., gmc yukon xl, yukon xl

Question
Hey, I have been looking around to getting a sound system for my 2001 GMC Yukon XL. I have a budget of I would say $700 dollars. I am a person who LOVES bass. I would look on my own but I get to confused on how stuff works and what not. If there is anyway you could help me pick out a decent system that will work with my car I would appreciate it.

Answer
Hi James,

I can give you some advice on designing a system for your truck, but I'd need some more information first.  A $700 budget probably doesn't allow for a complete upgrade, so you'll need to decide what your goals are.

First of all, are you happy with the factory system, aside from the level of bass output?  Is there anything you'd like to do, that you can't with the factory system; such as connect an iPod or portable music player, or use burned CDs with MP3's?  Are you satisfied with the sound of the factory speakers in terms of clarity and sharpness?

Some technical details: is your vehicle equipped with Onstar, or a factory Bose audio sytem?  Do you need to use your 3rd row seating, or do you have plenty of space for a box and subs?  Do you need to leave some room for carrying cargo?

If you're really just looking for improved bass output, you can put most of your budget into a high-powered amplifier and subwoofer system, and use it with your factory head unit.   Depending on your goals, however, you might want to consider a new head unit with more source options, and/or upgraded front speakers.

In general, I wouldn't worry about upgrading the rear door speakers, or the speakers over the cargo area.   Replacing these speakers doesn't pay off very much in terms of improved sound quality.  You'll want to focus on an amplifier and subwoofers, and possibly an upgraded head unit and front door speakers.  Don't forget to budget for installation accessories, like the amplifier wiring kit.

If you'd like to follow up with more information about your vehicle and your goals, I can make some more specific suggestions.

Hope this helps!
