Car Stereos: reception issues, xdm 6820, antenna wire

Question
QUESTION: Is it possible to break the cars antenna wire in the dash? I have installed and reinstalled several different radios-(trying to color code with the dash)and the Pioneer i like (DEH-P2900MP)fm fades in and out and with the other stereo (Dual XDM-6820)its not as bad - did I mess something up?-because the Dual sounds better, but is the Pioneer messed up?

ANSWER: Yes, it is possible to break the antenna wire.  As a matter of fact, it can be broken inside the insulation, and it will appear to be normal.  If there was any excessive pulling on the antenna wire, then it is very probable.  If there are more than one radios with reception problems, then I would probably replace the antenna wire.  If that does not cure the problem, they do sell a signal booster to help bring in the faulting stations. It just goes inline with your antenna wire, and is powered by the wire that powers your radio.  The Pioneer may have a weaker FM tuner than the Dual, but they should both be better than a factory radio.  So, if your factory radio received stations clearly, then there is a problem with the antenna wire for sure.  Hope this helps, Scott

QUESTION: Is there a way to test the cars antenna wire to see if it has a problem? I really dont have the means to change the antenna wire if its bad

Answer
Kory, the best way to check your antenna wire is to determine a station that used to come in clearly with the stock radio, and now it is coming in badly.  Once you have that station in mind, switch your radio back to stock and see if it is still coming in clearly.  If it is coming in clearly with the stock stereo connected, you know the wire is still good.  If the old stereo is not getting station, you know for sure it is the antenna.  I understand your frustration with thinking about replacing that wire, but it may be all you can do.  good luck
