Car Stereos: Reverse cam, montecarlo ss, wire bundle

Question
Hey Brian,
I bought a back up cam i thought it would be easy to install to my Savant MHD4720i double din indash tv. The back up cam doesnt have a name brand to it. I power the cam to my reverse lamp on my 2001 montecarlo ss just like the cam manual said. and put the yellow aud cord to the double din back up cam port. well my problem is that the radio doesnt realize when my car kicks in reverse. the radio has a white and brown wire i think i have to link that with my reverse lamp switch but dnt know where it is on my car. can u help me out with this Brian.

Answer
Hi Rico,

You really just have to connect the head unit's reverse input wire to the vehicle wire that powers your reverse lamps--ie, the same wire that it sounds like you used for the camera power.   You don't have to locate the reverse light switch itself.  The wire you need should be light green in color, and can be found in the passenger kick panel area--part of the wire bundle that runs below the door sill to the rear.  It's very likely that there's more than one light green wire in this bundle, so you'll want to test the wire with a multimeter before making your connection.  The correct wire will show 12 volts whenever you shift into reverse, and 0 volts otherwise.

Hope this helps!

Brian
