Car Stereos: JensenAWM970, wilderness camp, car radios

Question
QUESTION: Hi Brian I have a travel trailer that I am trying to retrofit to accomadate the Jensen unit to.  I have read so many things that I am confused as to how to connect.  The yellow wire and the red wire. The DC power runs to the trailer on demand as should the stereo. That being the case, do I wire them together to the hot wire or do I need to run an additional wire?

ANSWER: Hi Robyn,

You'll need to have power on both the red and yellow wire before the deck will turn on, but there's no reason you can't connect them both to the same power source.  If you'd like the Jensen unit to be powered whenever your trailer has power, then just connect both wires to your "hot" wire.  You'd only need to separate the wires if you wanted to control the deck's power through a separate switch.

Hope this helps!

Brian

QUESTION: One more thing if you will. After reading more, is the yellow wire the memory for settings and is it a constant draw on the batteries?  If that is the case, how much power will the unit draw on the batteries? We wilderness camp and have to keep check on the power consumption?

Answer
Robyn,

The memory wire is the yellow wire, and it does continuously draw on the battery, but if the radio is turned off (or the faceplate removed) the battery drain is quite low.  All car radios are designed to stay connected in a car for long periods with the engine off, without draining the battery.  As long as you remember to switch it off, I doubt you'll need to worry about the battery drain.

When the radio is playing, the  battery power used varies depending on how loud you play it (and how many speakers are connected).  Even if you're turning it up pretty loud, though, the average current drawn from the battery should be well under 5 amperes.

Have fun on your camping trip!
