Car Stereos: amp and sub, sony xplod, watts rms

Question
QUESTION: can I connect a 2 channel sony xplod 1252 gtr amp to a kicker 07dcvr 12 enclosure with only two connection posts? or do I need to get a mono amp?

ANSWER: Hi Cal,

To answer this, I'd need to know how many DVCR12 subwoofers are in the enclosure, and what's the final impedance of the sub system.  If it's a 4-ohm package, then you can connect the Sony amplifier to the subs in "bridged" mode.  If it's rated at 2 ohms, however, you'd probably be better off with a mono amp.

If you can follow up with more information about the subwoofer system, I can try to give you a more detailed answer.

Thanks

Brian

QUESTION: Thanks Brian- sorry for the lack of info... there are 2 subs in the box at 2 ohms, so I think I'll need a mono amp. Class D or BD?

Answer
Cal,

Yes, a mono amp is the right way to power that subwoofer system.  You should get good results with any amplifier rated between 400 to 800 watts RMS at 2 ohms.  Because it's a ported enclosure, however, I'd suggest looking for an amplifier with a built-in subsonic filter.  This helps prevent damage to the subwoofers from playing bass frequencies below the box's port frequency.  When you're using a ported box, playing very deep bass tones can cause distortion and damage from "over-excursion", which basically means the subwoofer cone can be forced past its mechanical limitations. A subsonic filter removes these very low bass frequencies from the audio signal.

There are many amplifiers available that will work well for you.  One amplifier that would be close to a perfect match is Kicker's ZX750.1.  It produces 750 watts RMS into a 2-ohm load, and includes a built-in subsonic filter.

Hope this helps!
