Car Stereos: RCA Preouts on my car stero?, rca cables, line output converter

Question
Brian,
I have a 2006 jeep liberty limited edition with a stereo model number RBQ 591507AE. I googled RBQ stereos and the pictures i found look like my model minus the equalizer on the the left. The question I have is without having to take the stereo out, are there RCA pre outs on my stereo(I need two for my Amp) and if not is there some kind of converter and where would I find that.
Thanks,
Eric West

Answer
Hi Eric,

I can count the number of factory head units with RCA outputs on one hand, and unfortunately, your Jeep head unit is not among them.  In order to connect your amplifier to the factory system, you'll either need an amp with high-level inputs (also called speaker-level inputs) or a device called a line output converter.   In either case, you'll make connections to your factory speaker wiring.

If your amplifier has high-level inputs, you'd extend the input leads (using ordinary speaker wire--it doesn't have to be very thick) and connect them directly to the factory speaker wiring.  The easiest place to find the factory speaker wires is at the rear of the factory radio.

If you don't have the high-level inputs, the line-out converter will connect to the factory speaker wiring in the same way.  The difference is that the line output converter will have RCA plugs, and you'll use a set of RCA cables to connect the converter to the amplifier.

You can purchase a line output converter at any car audio retailer, or from countless online sources.  I'd suggest that you buy an adjustable line output converter, not a fixed type.  This means that you can adjust the output levels on the RCA connectors.

I wasn't clear on whether you need two RCA jacks (a left and right set) or two pairs of jacks (left and right jacks for front and rear).  If you just need one pair of RCAs, buy a 2-channel LOC; if you need two pairs, buy a 4-channel version.

Hope this helps!
