Car Stereos: pioneer Deh P5000UB deck installation, blown fuse, pioneer deh

Question
QUESTION: i have installed this deck in my accord 98 Ex coupe. all seems to be working just fine but i have no dash light and weather control regulator back up light. my tail lights, headlights are working fine. i have checked the fuse for meter, back up light which is #9 on the driver side and it is not blown. i have used a wiring harness to connect the deck to the factory socket. am assuming, i have wired it incorrectly. i would be greatful if you would let me know which wire connects to which one. also i'd like to mention, i didn't disconnect the battery while installing the deck. but i have found no blown fuse so far.

please help me out.

thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Hi Muhammad,

There are actually two wires in the factory plug which are connected to the factory lighting system.  In the adapter harness, they're represented by a solid orange wire, and an orange wire with a white stripe.  If you're testing them with a meter, the orange wire should show 12 volts whenever the parking lights are switched on, and the orange/white will show voltage when the lights are on, but the voltage will vary according to the dimmer switch position.  Just for troubleshooting, if you have either of these wires connected, I'd disconnect them and insulate the ends.

I think the most likely explanation is still a blown fuse.  If either of these wires touched chassis ground while the lights were turned on, a blown fuse would be the result.  If you have a multimeter available, you can quickly check all your fuses while they're still in place.  Here's a tutorial for fuse-testing with a multimeter:

If you use this method, turn your light switch to the "parking light" position before you start testing the fuses.

Don't forget to check the fuse box under the hood.  I don't have access to a fuse diagram for your vehicle, but there's a very good chance that the panel lighting fuse is located in the engine compartment fuse box.

Of course, make sure your vehicle's dimmer switch is still plugged in, and not turned all the way down.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: I Have Checked The Fuse Box And Backuplights Fuse Is Not Blown, But There Are 4 Fuses In The Engine Compartment That Are Showing No Power Although They Are Not Blown. I Am Testing Them With A Circuit Tester. Fuse #13 On The Driver Side Is Also Showing No Continuity Although Its Not Blown. I Have Tried To Put My Factory Deck Back In (asking For Code And Don't Know My Code) But Still No Dash Light. This Is How I Connected My Pioneer DEH-p5000ub To The Wiring Harness. Wiring Harness --> Pioneer Deck
Dimmer(orange,wh) --> Ill (orange,wh) Illumination/dash Light (orange)-->ill (orange,wh) 12v Ignition/switched(red)-->Acc (red) 12volt Constant(yellow)-->battery+ (yellow)

Please Let Me Know If This Is How I Should Wire It. Thanks In Advance. Moe

P.S in your last answer did u mean i should not connect the solid orange and the orange/white wires at all ! please let me know cause i have them connected right now.

Answer
Hi Muhammad,

I suggested disconnecting both illumination wires until you can identify the problem, just so you can eliminate the head unit wiring as a cause.  In general, there's no problem with connecting the head unit to an illumination source, but you should not have both wires from the harness connected to a single wire on the Pioneer deck.  In effect, you're connecting the two factory illumination circuits together, which could be the cause of the problem.

You should connect only one illumination wire to the orange/white wire from the deck.  I would connect the orange wire from the harness to the orange/white wire from the deck, and leave the orange/white wire in the adapter harness disconnected.  Again, make sure it's insulated so it can't short against another wire or dash metal.

When checking your fuses for power, make sure your parking lights are switched on.  Some fuses may be powered from the light switch.

Good luck with your troubleshooting.
