Question
Car Stereos: 6 disk changer in subaru doesnt work, hook ups, crazy steven
stereo
My 1993 subaru impreza has an in-dash 2001 6 disk deck in it. Worked for years but I had to remove it for a couple minutes. When I reinstalled it the only thing that works is the button lights and screen backlight. No other actions can be performed. Even the radio doesn't work. I've had no music for six months and am going crazy.

Answer
Steven,

That does sound odd.  Assuming the removal had nothing to do with the radio, I would suggest double checking hook ups and be sure ground is still good.  Unless there are some bare wires in behind the radio, I wouldn't think there is any type shorting problem.  Most likely there is some sort of sequence of button pushes to unlock the radio.  Right around 2000 - 2001, many automakers made their radios theft deterrent with unlock codes that only the dealers can do.  The problem is whenever the battery is disconnected from the car, these radios have to be reset.  Call your local Subaru dealer and ask them.  If not, something may have shorted inside the radio during the removal, and it will have to be repaired at an electronics repair shop.  Hope this helps, Scott
