Car Stereos: aftermarket head unit powers but no sound, dodge ram 1500, infinity sound

Question
i have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 pickup with the infinity sound system. after buying an aftermarket head unit  i also  bought  wiring harness hooked up all of the wires and when i came to plug it in i had power but no sound and i can't figure out why

Answer
roger,

That is strange.  Usually the wiring harness adapter is pretty easy to read and straight forward, so it should work to the instructions.  Unfortunately, sometimes there are more wires than we know what to do with, and there are some wires that need to be checked even if not using.  Double check all wire connections (always the first step).  Then, be sure black ground wire is attached securely to ground of vehicle.  Third, make sure any unattached wire is taped over or capped with a wire nut.  There are wires coming from the radio that are charged with power.  If they touch a ground point, the radio will short out, and you will experience something similar to what you are experiencing.  If all this does not fix the problem, try playing a cd.  Sometimes the FM antenna connection gets messed up, and with FM mute pretty common on most radios anymore, no signal means no sound.  If a cd plays through the speakers, then a new aerial wire may be in order.  Sometimes they wear ground spots or just break from cold weather.  If nothing works, take the unit to a local stereo shop, and they can test it for you.  I am guessing that it probably has a short and will need repair before it works.  Hope this helps, Scott
