Car Stereos: car amplifier, passive crossovers, channel amp

Question
QUESTION: I currently have a bazooka amp hooked up to my sub. I want to wire it to my rear speakers, but I do not know how. My speakers have been replaced and are 3-way speakers. The amp does not have speaker level inputs. Is there still a way to wire the amp to my speakers, and if so how? Thanks in advance for your help.

ANSWER: Hi Bryce,

Unless it's a 4-channel amp, it's probably not practical to hook it up to your rear speakers and your sub at the same time.

A 4-channel amp could have two outputs connected to the speakers, and the other two bridged for a subwoofer.

If your amp is a 2-channel design, it can be connected to the speakers and the sub in what's called "tri-mode".  One speaker is connected to each channel, and the sub is wired to both channels in a bridged configuration.  However, to do this you need to use passive crossovers so that the sub only plays bass and the 6x9's only play higher frequencies.  Passive subwoofer crossovers are getting hard to find.  Another disadvantage of tri-mode wiring is that you can't adjust the volume of the sub separately from the speakers; if one is too loud or too soft compared to the other, you can't do anything about it.

If your amp is a mono design, it's only made to be used with a sub, not with full-range speakers.

If you'd like to send a follow-up question with the model number of the amplifier and the sub, I can try to give you more specific information.  However, unless you have a 4-channel amp, your best option is probably to either add another amplifier for your speakers, or upgrade your amp to a 4-channel or 5-channel model.

QUESTION: The model number on my amp is bazooka ELA100.2. It has 2 channels. How would i wire it to just my speakers and not my sub? Is that possible? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Certainly, that's possible.  If you just want the speakers connected, not the sub, that makes things easier.

Your amplifier has speaker connections labeled L and R, each with a (+) and (-) terminal.  Just connect your left speaker to the L terminals, and your right speaker to the R terminals.  Use speaker wire, of 16 or 18 gauge.  Each of your speakers will probably have a small terminal and a large terminal.  The large terminal is the (+), and the other is (-).

Your amplifier has an RCA cable that should be connected to the back of your CD player.  If it's currently connected to a "subwoofer" output at the CD player, you'll probably need to change it to a "rear" output.

The amp has a switch labeled "filter".  Make sure it's on the "flat" setting to run your speakers.

There's an installation manual for your amplifier available for download at Bazooka's web site.  If you don't have the manual and you'd like it, copy and paste this link into your browser:
