Car Stereos: car radio, antenna connection, saab 95

Question
FM works great but AM seems to have a loose connection.  When I hit a bump reception will either get better or worse.  I can hit the dashboard and get it to come in a little better.  Only affects AM,  the FM is not affected.  This is a 2001 Saab 95.

Answer
AM is generally a little more sensitive than FM, so the problem may seem greater on AM.  This type of issue usually is caused by one of two issues.  Sometimes the antenna connection or wire has become compromised.  It may be a lose connection, a kink in the cable, or a spot where the insulation has wore off.  Usually fixed with a visual inspection of the antenna components, and repaired as needed.  The other problem could be a worn or loose connection inside the radio.  Usually, radios are built tough enough to withstand everyday driving, but some aren't quite up to par, and they become loose or worn over time.  To repair this problem, usually a professional can locate the problem area and reattach it fairly easily.  Either way, the radio will need to be removed to access the problem areas.  It will probably get worse as time goes on, so you may wish to live with it for a while, but sometime down the road it will stop working altogether.  Hope this helps, Scott
