Car Stereos: Spooked Stereo!, jeep liberty, volume knob

The stereo on/off/volume knob in our '02 Jeep Liberty has "an issue." It doesn't like to be touched. If we forget, the sound goes off, the system flashes on and off and the disc drive goes searching for a disc.  Maybe the next day it will decide to come back on, but in the meantime, none of the controls will work.  How do we get the ghosts out?

First, you're going to need a young priest, an old priest, a bell, a bible, and a candle.  If only it were that easy.

The likely scenario is that there is a short in the stereo, and the short is at or near the volume knob causing it to short out each time you touch it.  Unfortunately, your only options are like to be don't use it, or buy a new one.

New aftermarket decks including mounting hardware, etc, is usually cheaper than going OEM, so that's always an option.
