Car Stereos: Replacement speakers, self tapping screws, replacement speakers

I have a '92 volks jetta and need to replace the rear speakers.
It's a 6 speaker system and I'm wondering if I can put in any new speakers or if I have to closely adhere to the original specs.

Having had a car with the identical speaker set up to yours in the past, I know this car better than most other cars.

There actually is no direct match with the factory size anyway, so you have a little leeway.  The fun part is modifying things to make them fit.

As long as you can get the speakers to stay via one method or another (I used self tapping screws to screw speakers into the dash, and snipped off some plastic in the door panels and c-clamped them in place in the dash with some locktite).
