Car Stereos: 1996 Ford Explorer Head Unit Question, ford explorer eddie bauer, explorer eddie bauer

Question
I have a 1996 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition with fords head unit and i would like to know if it is possible to add aftermarket amps and subs to this head unit. Bassically is there a pre-amp output or do i need some type of line output converter?

Answer
Hi Andrew,

I don't know off-hand whether there's a line-out on the deck or not - being factory, it's unlikely.  The best way to check is to pull it out and see.

Regardless of whether there is one or not, though, you can certainly add an amp and some subs.  Simply buy a high level output converter and tap into the rear speaker wires, or buy an amplifier with high level inputs, and run a tap from the rear speaker wires directly to the amp.

If you can afford it, I'd suggest the former, though, since high level inputs over long distances that get amplified always run a higher risk of getting EMI and interference/engine whine.
