Auto Racing: Am I too old?, sports car club, lemans race

Question
I am 25 and served 4 years in the navy. I almost alway win when I race. I haven't done anything pro, just go-carts and a couple of local races. I don't have a lot of money. Where do I start? Please help.

Thank you for your time,
James E. Milanese

Answer
Hi James:

Start by joining SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) go to : www.scca.org for information. There you can locate your local region and contact them for information. Membership is about $85 a year and you get a get great magazine plus the ability to attend numerous local races, rallies, solos and other events.

You will immediately be able to participate as a worker of one type or another under supervision of course. Course working has it's own benefits. Many of our worker members are with us for the enjoyment of being trackside. PLUS they get to work pro events around the country. We are about to have the big Sebring race in my region and we will have 200+  workers from all over the US, Canada, England and possibly other countries. And One of our gals goes to France every year to work the LeMans race- - -they love her for it.

So , then you will also see what kinds of cars we race, from the $1500.00 back yard special to top of the line Trans-Am cars costing $200.000.00 or more.  That will give you an idea of where you can manage to start (and it will take time).  It's the best thing I know to tell you.  Are you too old ?
Hell, I started at age 50 - - -so I guess not !
