Auto Racing: Dirt 510, rear end gears, rear sway bar

Question
Hi Dan, I am setting up a 1970 Datsun 510 4dr to race 1/4 mile dirt oval. Was wondering if you could give me some ideas on suspension setup or tricks. I was planing on welding up the rear end and setup some stager. Thanks!!!

Answer
Well, what do you mnean by "welding up the rear end"  The suspension , or the gears  inthe differential. I would not recommend neither.

However I would put about 4 degrees of negative camber in the LR, and about 2 degrees positive in the RR, I would probably retain the stock springs but cut about 1 1/2 inches off the top to lower the car some and stiffen them up a bit. Then I would add about a 3/4 " rear sway bar to combat the body lean .

As far as the rear end gears go, I would try to find a 4:11 set of gears for it, and then start haunting e-bay for a posi-raction type center.  Subaru used the same diff for a few years, it's made by Fuji Havy Idustries.  Change it to the 4.11:1 rear gears and you have a winning combo. Always use synthetic oil in everything !!  I avoid Mobil One because it doesn't hold up in the presence of heat like some of the others.  I use Amzoil , or you can use Royal Purple, Lucas , or a half dozen others.

STagger will work on very short tracks, but becomes a problem onthe longer stretches.I would learn to race without it .

That's about all I ana think of for now, write beck when youhave some results.
