Auto Racing: Starting a racing career, sports car club, google search

Question
Hi. My name is Ashley, I'm 22. I've been wanting to start a career in racing, I've already gone to school for auto mechanics, and am thinking about how to start this. But I am clueless on how to start, I've been going to websites and trying to get sponsorships but haven't had any luck. Could you tell me how to get started, point me in the right direction?

Answer
Hi Ashley !

I admire your spunk !

You are a little ahead of the game , looking for sponsors. Most people gain some in-car racing experience before taking that direction.

If you are looking toward a professional career in racing, frankly you're a bit too old. Most of today's pro drivers started racing Go Karts when they were as young as 5. Examples are Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson, Danica Patrick, Michael Andretti and others. Racing anything is good though, my own son started in BMX Bicycle racing at age 11 and when he got in his first race car, was a natural.

To start racing for the enjoyment, join Sports Car Club of America < www.scca.org >  Go to their web site and search for a district in your area. Annual membership is about $85 per year, and you can start to attend amateur races right away.  You will learn the ins and outs of road racing, and will have many opportunities to join the fun as course worker or in many other capacities .  You will also be able to learn what it takes to actually start driving in races. I must warn you  it's moderately expensive but budget conscious individuals manage to participate.

To move from SCCA to professional racing takes a lot of commitment and a whole lot of work, but it can be done. One driver I know of is Randy Pobst do a Google search with his name for more info.

I wish you luck in your efforts, racing of course, is one of the most exciting and demanding of all athletic efforts, and one of the most rewarding.

Sincerely,

Dan Liddy
