Auto Racing: F1 Wind Tunnels, wind tunnel, aerospace

Question
Hi expert!

Which is the most sophisticated and technologically advanced wind tunnel in Formula One??

Answer
Dear Jose,
There are a few wind tunnels in Europe that actually tout themselves as an F1 Wind tunnel. This is primarily due to the tunnels having a "rolling road" in the tunnel itself. Renault, BMW, and Honda probably have the newest ones. Each tunnel comes with it's pros and cons so to specifically identify one as superior to the rest would be impossible.
There are quite a few wind tunnels in the United States too, but only one that has a true rolling road. All of the other tunnels attempt to simulate the interactions with the ground by energizing the boundary layer by some artificial means.
I am not sure of the cost to rent tunnel time in Europe, but the tunnel here in the states that has a moving belt will run you about $4500or more per hour. Older tunnels in the states (that do not have a moving belt) will typically charge between $600 to $1800 per hour.
Moving belts are quite interesting in that it more accurately simulates the aero conditions that a vehicle travels through. But the technology required to operate one along with the reoccurring costs of replacement belts, makes it incredibly expensive.
I have worked in wind tunnels for almost 40 years and it is quite an interesting business. Feel free to contact me again if you require further information. BTW, several years ago I was able to travel to DR for a week with a baseball team with Score International. Your country is very beautiful and I enjoyed meeting many people there.

Best Regards,
