Auto Racing: SBC heads, jb weld, mounting bolt

Question
QUESTION: Hey Matt. If you had to choose between a set of 993, 441, or 882(overlooking the fact they are crack prone) heads to race, which would you pick and why? They have the same sizes valves and are the same price.

ANSWER: I need more specifics. They are all 76 cc heads but the 882's flow better than the rest.

QUESTION: They all have 1.94/ 1.50 valves, everything on them is stock. They've all been cleaned and magged and the guy only wants 100  bucks for a pair bare, so I'M trying to figure out what pair! Looks like I've eliminated the 441's. So it's between the 993's and the 882's. A lot of people say don't use the 882's because they crack but I think I could probabley keep the 882's cool enough to keep them from cracking so..

Answer
I would go with the 882 heads. There is a trick you can do to increase the cooling on the small block. It comes from Grumpy Jenkins book that is available from HP books. Using the head gasket as a template, drill the block to accept an additional spark plug cooling hole per plug. If you look at the deck side of the head you will see a slot under where the plug threads in. The block only has one hole. Add the other hole at the opposite end of the slot. Do this for each plug location. Second you need to block off half of the water pump inlet on the pass side with a piece of sheetmetal. This boosts water pressure and helps to eliminate steam pockets. Also, on the block side of the water pump mount, passenger side, there is a small hole below the bottom pump mounting bolt. Fill this hole in with JB weld. This is the pump bypass and is not needed.
This may all sound confusing, but if you get the book it will all be clear!
