Auto Racing: engine swaps, engine swaps, 4 banger

Question
mid 80's 'stang, have a 302 I want to put in to replace the 4 banger. would this be a fairly easy swap has swaps go or will I be fabricating parts? Can you reccomened a mid grade pointless ignition system that wouldn't require alot of re-wiring. it's being built for teenager would disconeccting the secondarys on the carb cause any damage?

Answer
Steve-

Sure, the swap is pretty straight forward.  It only requires parts from any '79-'93 Mustang that originally had a V8 in it...no fabrication required.  Aside from the engine brace (or the "K-member"), you'll probably want GT springs, front brakes, and 8.8" rear end.  All of that will help it handle the extra weight and power of the 302 vs. the 2.3L.  A simple pointless ignition is an easy one.  Lots of companies make aftermarket ignitions, although MSD is probably the most popular.  Just get yourself a control box (I'd recommend the simple entry level 6A box), a distributor, and a coil and you're all set although you might need an adapter for the tachometer because of how the MSD setup works.  Just remember to mount the box away from heat since they don't tend to last long otherwise.  I wouldn't recommend disconnecting secondaries from a carb.  Aside from making the engine run funny, it could create a danger in a passing situation.  If it's keeping speeds under control that you're looking for, you might consider MSD's 6AL box instead of the 6A.  The only difference is that the AL has a rev limiter built in that's controlled with what are called "pills".  They come in all variety of rpm ranges and simply plug into the box.  Hope this helps.
