Auto Racing: successful launch, wheel drive cars, wheel drive car

Question
Hi, I was wondering what the most effective way to reduce or eliminate wheel hop in a front wheel drive car with a manual transaxle is. I have a nasty, violent case of it. I heard replacing the mounts is good, but it seems like it's my tires to me. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Justin:

I wish I could help you but when I left drag racing we were still starting off a flagman.  That and front wheel drive cars were VERY rare, the Austin Mini is the only one I know of.

Now I'm guessing here, but wheel hop is caused by too much compliance in the suspension.  The rubber bushings that dampen road noise, the soft front shocks and soft springs all contribute to it.  I think if you will spend some time trying to stiffen up the front suspension a little it will help   BUT- - - I am only guessing. You should try to find somebody at your local strip that is willing to help, and knows something about it.

I'm really sorry I couldn't offer more help. let me know when you start road racing , that I know about !!

Best of luck !
