Hi Clint:

I normally don't take questions about street cars, but I always admire a person who is concerned with proper maintneance of his vehicle.

First you should go to a book store and buy the Haynes Repair Manual for your car. They are abou t$15.00 and filled with good information about maintaining your car, and repairing it also.  Later on as you gain confidnece, it will be invaluable in teaching you some basic things about car repair and care.

For now, change your oil !  I would suggest you use a good brand of full synthetic oil. (Not Mobil One) perhaps Castrol Syntec, or Valvoline and others make quality products.  Personally I use Amzoil which you have to buy from a private dealer. If you go to a parts house, be sure to insist on FULL synthetic, not a blend. Synthetics run $2 to $3 more than petroleum oils but they do not break down chemically like the petro oils to , they do a better job of lubricating internal parts, and the car will last longer.  Also change the transmission to a synthetic product.  If you have trouble finding one, write me again, I'll see that you get some one way or another.

Once you start using Synthetic in the motor you can run it for 10,000 miles without worry, but you still must change the filter every 3000 miles or so. Add enough synthetic oil to bring it back to the 'full line'.

I'm serious about this stuff, it's amazing. I know of a salesman who uses synthetic in his automatic transmission and it's still going after 350,000 miles.  That's about 3 to 4 times the life of a normal transmission of that type.  My own cars run 300.000 and further on it. My race cars run cooler, faster and more reliably than I could hope using the old stuff. And finally, there are NO racing teams that use anything else even if they advertise something else. They ALL use the synthetics.

Next, once a year at least you should change the coolant in the radiator, and the brake fluid in the brake system. Completely replace it.  If you can't figure that out, write me again.  You might hfind a mechanic willing to do it for you , he shouldn't charge you more than about $60 for it, you can do it yourself in 2 hours for about $5.00

Now then. You should check the air in your tires once every two weeks and keep them filled to the manufacturers recommendations. Probably about 30 to 35 PSI .

Finally read the owners manual, if youdindnt get one, go to the dealaer and try to order one.   and like above get the repair manual I mentioned. Book stores have them , or can order them, parts stores frequently stock the more popular ones.

Good luck and let me know If I can help further

Hi again:

First , forget about the puff of black smoke.  Fuel injection systems do that occasionally, and it doeson't mean anything.

To check your tire pressures, you will have to get a tire pressure guage. Go to a parts house like Auto Zone, Pep Boye or Advance and ask for one. They range in price from $3.00 to probably $30 or more, and you get what you pay for, however something is better than nothing.  Once you find the guage you want and can afford, ask the salesperson to show you how it's used.  It's  really quite simple, and once you learn how to add air you will have it whipped.   Maybe you could find aguy at a service station that would be willing to teach you a few things.

Again, good luck

Answer
OK  Look in your yellow pages for Oil-Lubricating , then look for "Amsoil Dealers" .  also you may want to look under Oils Synthetic.

Amsoil is the one I use but you can also use Castrol Syntek which you can buy at your local parts houses. You could also use Valvoline Max Life Synthetic. Both are fine products which I recommend if you don't want to go thru the aggrivation of finding an Amsoil dealer.  Amsoil is also the most expensive of the three at about $5.50 per quart and you must buy a case of 12. and probably pay shipping charges too.

Be sure when you change it  to use the recommended weight- - -most newer cars use 5 W 30 but check with the manufacturer's recommendation and follow it.
