Auto Racing: Alter 9, dirt tires, riverview florida

Question
I would like to know how to install a 9" into a 1981 Firebird?  I know I need to cut the tubes down, but do not know how to line them back up.  I know I can order the brackets and weld them on, but I do not know the pinion angle I need.  I race at a 1/2 mile clay track with Hoosier dirt tires.  I would like any info you can give me on putting this into my race car!  Thanks, Alvin

The guy around here that is the real guru is Jimmy Frankland, of Frankland Gear (or something like that)  They make quick change units and a lot of really trick stuff.   Anyhow Frankland is in Riverview, Florida .  You could also try the tech guys at Summit Racing <www.summitracing.com>

I think what you do is get the tubes lined up by using straight edges aligned on the flanges at the outer ends. Then measuring between them so they're even, then start your welding. Jump around while you're welding too, so you don't heat one area too much at a time

When your welding is done it's gonna be like a pretzle from all the shrinking, THEN you straighten it and hang it in the car.

As for how to install it, you'll have to consult some of the other local racers, most of them will be glad to help you.  I haven't done any circle track work in so long I forget which way we turn !!   I do know that you want a three link arrangement as opposed to the conventional four link, the three link gets better bite off the corner, and is less likely to step out on you  when you add power. Just makes the car a little bit more drivable.
