Auto Racing: Setting up a car., grass roots motorsports, buick grand national

Question
I have a couple of questions, first i'm going to try and enter the grass roots motorsports challenge in 2006. i have a 1991 plymouth lazer that i picked up to enter. my questions are, i have a 2.0 turbo mitsubishi motor, will it bolt up in place of my sohc 1.8 motor. 2nd should i stick to the origonal turbo or is there a larger one i could find in a junk yard that would work, possible off a saab, volvo or buick grand national,"very popular cars in the junk yards around my town". 3rd i know that there are many cars that came from the factory with slotted brake rotors, would the rotors off say a corrado fit. i have many other questions but these are the bulk of what i need to know. as i'm sure your are aware there is a price cap of 2006$ for the event so i need to do this on the cheap. i can install all of the parts myself as well as rebulid the engine but i'm not very good on mix and matching of parts.any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Nick.

I believe the Mitsu motor should fit the Laser without too much cutting and fitting.  BUT you must do a LOT of measuring and very careful measuring before you start.   As far as which rotors might fit what spindles , that's also a matter of cutting fitting measuring, and asking around of others who have experience with thae particular car.

In my case, I can tell you a lot about Nissan parts, especialy old Datsun stuff, cuz I race the 510s in SCCA.    We don't see many Mitsu's and no Dodge or Chrysler products in our fields.

For the mix and match, you just have to go to the junk yard and look closely at what you'd like to have, then take a few measurements to see if you can make it work.. When it comes to changing strut assemblies, there can be some differences in the built in camber that will prevent you from using  a particular part, so be sure and check the angle between the spindle, and the strut tube or mounting surface. I hope you know how to weld and have access to some good equipment. If you're going to buy a welder, write me first.

Good luck in the 2006 challenge, I keep thinking I'd like to try it, but I don't have a car right now that I could qualify.

Write again if you need to ask anything else
