Auto Racing: carbs, holley 3310, slap shifter

Question
Hi John,
I have an 81 Cutlass with a 350 Rocket from about 1968. The cam specs (240 deg. at .5" lift) with good tourque well up to 6800rpm. I have a 350th trans and a quicksilver slap shifter. I'm not sure of the rear end.  But to get to the point.  What type of carb do you suggest? brand, style, size etc.

thanks in advance,
Ken

Answer
Hi Ken. 6800 rpm?whew!Stock bottom end? that's a bit high for stock connecting rods.Without knowing the rear end ratio or converter size(dia. stall speed) i'd say stay away from double pumpers.A safe choice would be #1 a well prepped Quadrajet (my favorite on an Olds),They flow about 750cfm,They can sense engine vaccuum and open the secondaries by engine demand ,a core carburetor is almost free,or you can get one from edelbrock,(these carbs go low 10s in super stock drag racing.a second choice is a     Holley 3310 750/780 vaccuum secondary carb ,I've built many of these over the years and right off the workbench they were as quick and even quicker than a  same size double pumper. they are reasonbly priced new and i buy them up at swap meets used pretty cheaply .Good Luck .Jmazio
