Auto Racing: Mazda 2.0L, castrol syntec, 1986 mazda b2000

Question
I apologize for this "street car question", but I thought you may be most helpful.  I have a 1986 Mazda B2000 with a 2.0L engine.  I was wondering if there is anything I can do to pep it up a little bit as far as air intakes, exhaust, computer chips etc.  Also, how do air intakes work and can they be applied to carburated engines?

Answer
Hi Matt;

As long as you aren't drag racing on the street all is OK.

You can purchase an air filter kit from K&N filters which will wake up your car a bit,  if you have fuel injection get the FIPK they mention.   Also you can use an exhaust header and open mufflers which will help.  You'd better pick up a copy of Sport Compact at your local newsstand, there will be a number of companies willing to help you with exhaust systems.   The subject of chips is beyond me. In my kind of racing I don't use them.

The 2.0 liter four is a good little motor, treat it right. Especially, use a symthetic oil (I don't recommend Mobile One) try Castrol Syntec, and you can run it for 15,000 miles!  Just change the filter every 3000 Mi.  and add enough oil to top it off. The synthetics lubricate better, and don't break down from heat like petroleum oils do.
In my race car, I use Amzoil which is a bit more expensive, but amazingly, when I switched, I could tell the difference on the track !

That's about all I can offer this time, but feel free to ask more as you get further into your project.
