NASCAR Racing: PIT ROAD SPEED SAFETY, tank pressure, practice sessions

Question
WHY DOESN'T NASCAR MAKE IT MANDITORY FOR THE RACE CARS TO HAVE SPEEDOMETERS? IT WILL MAKE PITTING SAFER THAN GUESSING THE SPEED BY THE TACHOMETER ANG GEER THE CAR IS IN. A SPEEDOMETER REQUIRES NO THINKING OR CALCULATION OR THINKING. THE DRIVER JUST LOOKS AND KNOWS INSTANTLY HOW FAST THE CAR IS GIONG. THEY SELL 200 TO 250 MPH SPEEDOMETERS ON THE WEB.

Answer
Hi Walter,

The Speedometer itself would be partially irrelevant. Yes, it might make pit road safer, but in the practice sessions, the teams will usually practice dropping to pit road speed to find out what that RPM is. So they have a pretty good idea of where the RPM for pit road in the race.
They also don't have them because they are going as fast as they can go, whether that be 190-200. So the speed differential during the race between the cars is not so significant that they need to measure it.
Plus, the limited dash space the driver can see needs to be used for the car's measurements (gas tank pressure, temperature, oil, RPM). So these pieces of info are much more critical to the car's performance than the speed itself.

Hope this answered it,
