NASCAR Racing: YELLOW FLAG RULES, pit stall, flag rules

Question
I THOUGHT THAT ANYTIME YOU ENTER THE PITS UNDER GREEN A FLAG AND A YELLOW COMES OUT YOU AUTOMATICALLY GO A LAP DOWN.
CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW JEFF GORDON CAME OUT ON TOP TO-NITE AT PHOENIX ?
THANKS, WAYNE

Answer
Hey Wayne,
Last night, Gordon had the very first pit stall due to his first place start during qualifying.  When he came down pit road he passed the start/finish line to start the next lap. So technically he was tail end of the lead lap as the leaders.  However, if he had a pit stall BEFORE the start/finish line, he would have gone a lap down because he stopped for a pit right before the line during the time the leaders actually crossed the start/finish line. But the reason he won was because during the caution, all of the OTHER leaders had to come in to make their pit stops, thus, Gordon inherited the lead. Hope I answered your question.
