NASCAR Racing: tire changes, pit space, lug nuts

Question
when a nascar tire is taken off to be changed, where do the lug nuts go?  I know that on a tire to be put on, they are put on with adhesive.

They go wherever the wrench throws them. Most usually stay close to the pit space. Due to the lack of excitement, they don't usually show the crew member that has to go out after all the pit stops are completed and sweep up the VERY hot lugnuts from wherever they land.
