NASCAR Racing: Modified racing at Spartanburg, S.C. Fairgrounds, tim flock, infield grass

Question
My dad took me to Spartanburg, SC (I think 1954 because Joe Littlejohn gave away a new 1954 Ford).  During the race two or three cars crashed coming out of the 4th turn onto the main stretch with a hugh fire resulting.  A driver was severely burned.  I was only 7 years old and have wondered for 50 years who he was and if he survived that wreck.  He was carried to the Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg.  There was also an Indian racing that night...could it have been Gober Solesbee?  Can you find any info about that race?   I think it was either the July 4th race or the fair race.  I really would appreciate an answer because this has bugged me for 50 years!   By the way I have good piture of the number V/8 of Ralph Earnhardt at McCormick Field in Asheville, N.C.  I just found  your webb page and saw the question about Ralph Earnhardt.  Thanks, Randy

Answer
I searched all my record but I could find no record of a fire in the July race at Spartansburg in 1952-1956. Can you remember who won the race? That would give me a definite year but the brief descriptions I have from each of those races still don't list anyone injured in a fire. Sosebee didn't run in '54 at that race but did run in '53. The '53 race had a "freak accident" when Tim Flock was taking a nap on the infield grass (after an all night trip from a race in NY the day before) and had a car back over him (parked on his head!!!). He was taken to the hospital where doctors said he would be out of action for a few months. Thjis race was run on the 4th, the race in '54 was run on the 3rd.

Sorry I can't find anything else. If you can come up with anymore details let me know and I'll try again. Could it have been a different track?
I would love to get a copy of your Ralph photo. If possible please send it to me at stooge@fullnet.net.
Thanks!!!
