BMW Repair: 1984 BMW 318i, air flow meter, bmw repair

Question

attached to fuel regul
QUESTION: Hello Tony,

I had to start a new thread it said there were to many
follow ups.

Yes removal of the old gas was one of the first things that
was suppose to be done I ask the mechanic to do that before
he started he said he did, but like I said before he is not
that good at working on foreign cars. Is there suppose to be
gas in my AFM boot? There wasn't much there, there was only
a little bit but there was some in there.

I have another piece that this sorry mechanic took off that
I just realized is missing, and told me wasn't important can
you tell me what this piece is please, it looks like a
flying saucer attached to half a circle. About 3 cm across
and 2.5cm high.

ANSWER: I wish I knew how to do that.!

How do you circle and draw on a photo?

That bit is a fuel resonance suppressor. He is right, you dont need them, as they tend to leak anyway.

Don't worry about the small amount of fuel in the air flow meter boot.Fumes from the crankcase end up there sometimes.

What else can we try,any whistling noises when running?
You can spray some carb cleaner around the intake manifold where it connects to the cylinder head and around basically everywhere that has air running thru it looking for a change in rpm's while it idles. This would indicate an air leak.

By the way the follow ups are easier for me  so i can review each question to remind me what was already said,as I have several on the go at any given time.

QUESTION: To draw the circles and arrows or squares what ever shape
you want is easy if you have a windows computer you can just
do it in paint thats all i use then save it as a .jpeg file
or .gif file i think thats the name of it .gif either way
you can do it with a paint brush or pencil. You have to copy
the picture from were ever it is at then paste it in paint
then drawn on it and save.

No it doesn't make a whistling sound. It kind of sounds like
a go cart trying to get going. would you suggest a new
distributer rotor or no because it does start up right away
it just wants to sputter like a little engine that wants to
but doesn't have enough power.

I have another picture for you, he put a screw in the bottom
of the hose that connect to something but I don't know what.
I was wonder what this piece is?

ANSWER: Didnt get the 2nd picture.

I assumed you had a good look at the distributor and rotor. How did this car run before it was laid up for years?

Piece on back of engin
QUESTION: The car ran wonderful before it didn't have any issues or
problems that I can remember.

Yes I looked at the distributor cap and rotor it didn't look
the best but it didn't look to bad either. Could this issue
also be a spark plug issue with the gapping or would it not
start at all. They are new spark plugs but I don't know if
he did the gapping correct.

Also my needle that tells you how many MPG you are getting
goes crazy when I start it, it goes up and down then it goes
down to zero while my car is idling is that normal. When i
try to rev the engine it goes back up then down again like a
compass then back down to zero.

Ok here is the picture again.

Answer
That bit is the vacuum advance solenoid connected to the distributor.

If he rerouted the hose from the distributor so its not going there anymore ,make sure its NOT going somewhere that gets vacuum at idle!

In fact, for a test  disconnect the hose at the distributor and block the end. If its connected below the throttle plate it will retard the timing at idle.

Dont worry about the miles per gallon gauge, think of it as a 5th injector. It only really works while driving.

The plugs should be gapped relatively the same, they come pre set from the box and need adjusting, but wouldnt cause this problem, a rough idle maybe.

You have said it will run all day but struggles to rev, its got to be

1, not enough fuel pressure, measure it , correct pressure should be written on the fuel regulator, 2.5 0r 3 bar.You can momentarily pinch the fuel return hose coming off the fuel regulator with a pair of needle nose pliers while trying to rev it, see what that does.

2,not enough air, try another air flow meter if possible for a test.
Air filter and pick up hoses not blocked by a mouse nest! seen it before!, unplug the throttle switch to eliminate that.

Play with that for a while.
