BMW Repair: 1984 BMW 318i starts and runs press gas its dead..., air flow meter, mechanic work

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1984 BMW 318i that I have recently installed a new
fuel pump into. Before I installed the new fuel pump the car
wouldn't start at all now it starts and runs as long as I
don't press the gas pedal. As soon as I press on the gas
pedal it cuts off like a valve isn't opening right or
there's not enough fuel that is making it to the engine but
i figured if the car wasn't getting enough gas the engine
wouldn't remain running in idle i can leave the car on for
hours and it still runs. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks

ANSWER: There is no point scanning it as motronic 1.1 and cant help.

I would suspect a problem with the air flow meter that can be checked using an ohm meter.
Take off air flow meter and make sure the large door inside it isn't binding

Failing that, remove the square cover on the afm carefully and clean the carbon contacts that move when the "door" opens.

If the plugs look ok then there is correct fuel pressure.

Let me know how you get on , we will get there.

On top of engine
QUESTION: I really appreciate your help so far I have check the plugs
they are ok, i have cleaned the "AFM." I have found out that
there is a hole in the exhaust pipe that comes directly from
the engine about 10" down the pipe line. Now after doing
these things you specified, I can rev the engine a little
but it has to be very slow if i get to about 1800-2000 rpm
it starts to choke. Or if I press on the gas really hard it
chokes also.

If my boot that is connected to my AFM has a hole or a slit
in it can that cause a problem with the revving also? Is
there a way to raise your idle, my idle is at about 400 -
500 rpm right now is that normal?

I have some pictures attached I just want to know what goes
in these places. I let a sorry mechanic work on my Beamer
and messed it up.

ANSWER: the picture shows the diagnostic connector used mainly for reseting the service lights, there is a cover that fits over this but just cosmetic, forget about it.

If the boot has any leaks in it or cracks that is a  MAJOR problem.
It causes an unmeasured air leak before the afm and the computer doesn't "see" it.

Remove it and either repair with black tape or replace it.

After that when its running, unplug the throttle switch 3 pin connector and see how it revs. Clean the connector or replace the throttle switch if things dramatically improve.

Keep me informed.

QUESTION: Ok I have taped up my boot, till i get a new one and I have
cleaned the 3 pin connector on my throttle switch. It runs a
little better but I was wondering when I took my boot off I
had a small amount of gas in the boot is that normal or a
big NO, NO? It also spits out white smoke when it is reved
the little it does rev. I also forgot to mention to you at
the beginning that the car had been sitting for a few years.
But it still sounds like it is choking it runs very hard it
almost sounds like it wants to cut off but doesn't, this is
without even pressing the gas. Sparks have been changed,
fuel injection cleaner has been added, should i clean the
inside of the engine out with a engine restorer or cleaner
also.

Answer
Ahhhh, how the picture unravels.

You say it has sat around for a few years, then the fuel has too.
It deteriorates after a while and has a high water content!

Let me know if you have gotten rid of the old fuel already, or if you haven't, do so.

Let me know.
