BMW Repair: 95 318i M42 2dr conv engine rattle on startup, external linkage, two different places

Question
Hi-John I have Important questions
1. when cold on starting, this engine is knocking or rattle loud (best I can describe sound)..I friend looked under car and stated that the motor mounts had collapsed and that could be the engine knocking up against the cross bar under the car...He could see everything resting on this bar.  Does this sound correct?
When car warms up it subsides quite a bit. While I'm driving, I hear some rattle/ knocking sound.
Can the motor mounts cause other problems? if so like what?

2. Since this model does not have a dip stick for trans fluid check....I don't know how to maintain it.  Currently the gears are shifting very good, I do not ride my clutch. But when I'm shifting gears I hear like clanging or metal rattle...what could this be? Are the gears loose or is something about to come apart. It has got me worried.
Thanks So much for you feedback you have helped me before and I'm so pleased with your suggestions.
Sincerely,

Sondra

Answer
1.  Could be motor mounts, but if so, I wouldn't expect it to stop when warmed up.  Your motor mounts may be bad, and if so, should be replaced (can lead to other problems).

Take a closer look.  Does it rattle loud only when cold, and not once it's warmed up?  Or is it that as you drive it, it doesn't make as much noise?  A knocking in the engine can be a very serious thing, anything from low oil to bad oil pump to valves sticking to piston's rattling to ????  If you can't determine what it is, it's worth the $$ to have it checked out.

2.  Could be a lot of different things, from external linkage to bearings to ???.  Again, I'd get this looked at.  Most transmission repair places will give you a free diagnosis.  I'd recommend taking it to two different places, and ones that you believe you can trust.

Sorry I wasn't able to provide simple fixes for either of these.  A '95 318 convertible is a fun car, and worth taking care of. These could be minor, or could be significant.  Worth checking out.
