BMW Repair: BMW 530i 1994 with 37,000 miles, white elephant, bmw 530i

Question
My rear left passenger window won't go up and down. The motor runs and it makes a loud snap sound as if it sounds like the window will brake if I keep trying to make it go up or down. Can I fix this on my own, or should I take to a dealer, what is wrong and what does it cost to fix? Do I have a chance of selling this for $8,500, it is in really good shape, new I paid $42,000. It has rust or slight bubbling paint at bottom of doors and someone told me that happens because of the rubber strips at the bottom of each door, and I should remove them. Is it true I would need to buy new door since I was told that a good body man would not attempt to fix that rust or it can not be completed well. Do I have a a white elephant or is this still a great car? Me and my wife argueabout the value of this car, she says it is junk and I should accept about $2,000 for it.

Answer
I'll buy it for $2000.  send me a private message if you are really interested in selling it.   Check out sites like autotrader.com, cars.com, and enthusiast sites like roadfly.com to get a feel for it's actual value.

Try to take the interior rear door panel off, and see what you find. It's a pretty straight forward mechanism, and there are several slides that could break and are replaceable.  Shouldn't be tough to fix.

Rust is tough, but don't belive the guy who told you that you need new doors.  (Is he also the one who wants you to sell it to him for $2000?)  A good body man can fix it.  Question is cost.  Take it to several reputable body shops and get good quotes.  Don't do a "MAACO" job on it...spend some money if you are going to do it.

The bottom line on the car is that if you like it, it's worth keeping.  If not, yes, sell it.
