BMW Repair: 1994 525 starter, car work, initial stages

Question
The starter on my '94 525 appears to be in the initial stages of failure. Can I replace it myself? I am fairly handy and have done some car work in the past. Also, I notice that starters are available as are starter cores. How can I determine which I need? Thanks so much for your help.Jake

Answer
Probably one of the easiest starters to replace. The hardest part of the job is having the correct sockets or wrenches. They are "TORX" size on the bolt side and I believe it is a 17mm wrench nut.To buy one is up to how much you want to spend. At the parts store chances are if they aren't accustomed to BMW's they will have to order it.What I do is call Bavarian Autosport(bavauto.com)1-800-535-2002,they are about $180 and a $40 dollar core.
