BMW Repair: BMW 528i 2000, bmw 528i 2000, cigarette lighter

Question
There was a penney in the cigarette lighter and my son replaced the fuse in the truck.
Now the truck will not open without the key and the back doors don't lock (the buttons don't go down). If you open them the alarm goes off.
There are places for fuses in the trunk but not numbers so you know which one needs replaced.  Also in the glove compartment there are extra fuses.
do you think it is a fuse??? if not what can it be that would cause this.

Thanks Ann

Answer
A good way to tell if the fuses are in the correct locations is to look for metal where the prongs of the fuse insert.  If no connection (metal) there, then no fuse goes there.

On the trunk, there is something about turning the key/lock in one direction, then trying again.  Sorry I don't recall the exact detail, but try turning the key different ways, then trying the power unlock for the trunk.

The back doors/lock/alarm sounds odd.  Try the simple stuff first:  Disconnect the battery and wait 20 minutes (be sure to have the radio code first!)  That will reset your alarm, and may straighten it out.  If not, next look for the fuses that deal with the door locks.  May be in any of the locations.

If the locks aren't an easy one, then it sounds like the system thinks the doors are locked, so doesn't lock them, and alarms when the doors are opened.  If this was one door, I'd suggest it was a bad door lock sensor, but with two, it's more likely an open or a short in the circuit.

These are tricky.  Keep trying different things to learn what conditions things do and don't work.  That can narrow it down a lot.
