BMW Repair: M43 engine does not start., spark plug wires, engine cranks

Question
Hi, I have a nov 97 316i with m43 engine. Engine cranks but does not start. Compression has been checked and is OK. What could be the problem?

Answer
Not familiar with the m43, but basically two things are needed for combustion.....fuel and spark.

you need to confirm you're getting both at the cylinder.

For spark, use a long, INSULATED!!! pliers or ?? to hold a spark plug wire near the block, and see if a spark jumps.  If you don't know what your'e doing, DON'T do this.  Very high power running through the spark plug wires!

Determine if gas is getting there.  should be able to smell it.

Once you've determined which you don't have, then resolution will come easier.  Let me know what you find.
