BMW Repair: 2001 BMW 525 air temp sensor, cluster tests, metal bridge

Question
I ripped the temp sensor, got the -40F reading and still had the 2 white wires. The A/C was working though. I bought a new sensor and connector at the dealer and installed them and I still get the -40F reading. Is there some reset to do in the electronics somewhere, or is there something to pay attention to when connecting the sensor to the wires (left/right matters?)?
Thanks

Answer
Step, left and right doesn't matter. Make sure the wires have good contact. Disconnect the connector and take a small paper clip or metal bridge of some sort and short the wires together. Should read +122F I believe. If it doesn't try an instrument cluster reset. Turn key on engine off, second click forward of key. Press and hold left cluster button until you get 'test 1' Then tap the left button until you get to test 19. Display will alternate between 'L off' & 'L on'. Press left button when 'L off' is showing. This unlocks the cluster tests. Now go to test 21 and hit the left button and cluster should reset. Check operation of your sensor or bridge. If it still doesn't work then you have a wiring issue with most commonly a break in the wires further up. You may have to remove the cluster retaining screws and check the continuity of the wires from the cluster connector to the sensor and make sure you have a good circuit.
