BMW Repair: 528i overheat, cylinder head bolts, head bolt

Question
1997 528i overheated suddenly while driving on expressway no warning lights until occured and pulled over immediately. Had serviced three weeks earlier with Oil and Filter and inspection also in Sept 06 Had AC fan and "R and R" fan and repair. Co2 in coolant. Any recourse still deciding cost of repair? Good money after bad. Any suggestions? thanks in advance

Answer
Jules, have the valve cover removed and release the cylinder head bolts and have them retorqued. If the motor has been severly overheated the threads in the block will strip out. This requires a new motor. If the threads in the block hold then you know you have a shot at repairing the engine. Better to know this early than waste money on a cylinder head job only to find out the engine block is no good because the the head bolt threads stripped out upon reinstallling the cylinder head. Cost is up to you. Balance what the car is worth in current state and in repaired state, Cost of repair, Cost of getting a different Vehicle.
