BMW Repair: BMW1999 323i Trunk tail lightS problem, broken wires, deck lid

Question
Hello,
The dashboard indicator on my BMW 1999 323i displays the car with 2 turning on lights located on the rear site of the car. After I checked all lights I found that the both Tail Lights located on the trunk do not work. My first suspect was the bulbs. I bought a new one and changed it. Nothing happened. Then I checked visually all fuses located in the glove box and did not find any bad fuse. Based on your experience could you advice what could cause a problem and how it could be fixed.
Thanks a lot,
Vlad

Answer
Vlad, the tail lights on the deck lid are called brake force display lights they only come on when braking hard. In other words they don't come on when stationary. Do the reverse lights work? License plate bulbs work? Remove the cover to tail light housing on the body. remove the connector to each and inspect the connector for burning or melting. Look especially hard at the Brown ground wire and the opposing terminal on the tail light housing for any signs of burning or melting. Inspect all bulbs for blackened tint or pitted or melted contacts. If the Ground wires or connectors are burnt then take the car to the dealer for a wiring retrofit to add auxiliary grounds. There is a newer bulletin on this repair. If you isolate the problem to the deck lid (trunk) lighting pull back the rubber boot that protects the wiring on the right side going from the body to the trunk and inspect the wires for chaffing or broken wires that have rubbed on the body.
