BMW Repair: radio and cruise control not working, wheel button, fuse box

Question
QUESTION: Hi Evan
I just bought a 2000 323i. The radio control and the cruise control on the steering wheel does not work. I removed the steering wheel and found that the connector in the ring was bad. I replaced it (dealer Item)but still does not work(only the horn work).I look in the glove compartment fuse box but could not find one for the cruise control. I don't know where else to look. Please help before I spend my arms and legs at the dealer
ANSWER: Evens, did you replace the slip ring cassette or the connector wiring? The slip ring is usually what I see faulty. The part number is 61 31 8 379 091 or similar. You didn't give the VIN so I can't know for sure. I don't have access to the wiring diagram currently. Those two controls work over a K-bus signal (communication data bus). Let me know exactly what part was replaced.

QUESTION: Hi Evan
Thank you for answering me back. I did change the slip ring cassette. By the way the vin # is  WBAAM3345YFP80317 I also check fuse 2 in the ebox and the fuse in the glove box that say speed control, they are all ok. the only thing that's working is the horn.

Answer
Evens, I have looked at the wiring diagram for your car. check fuse 9 (5Amps). Fuse #9 power supply is connected by a purple with yellow tracer wire to pin #10 of the backside connector of the spring cassette. Please make these checks with the key on engine off. I would leave the airbag out. DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT THE AIRBAG WITH THE KEY ON!
You will incur an airbag light that will need to be cleared after the repairs. Check power at pin #4 (red wire) of the Left MFL (multifunction steering wheel) button. Check ground at pin#2 of Left MFL. and Pin#8 of the backside connector to coil spring cassette. Pin#9 is the K-Bus connection to the MFL on the backside connector of coil spring. You will need to measure this with an oscilloscope to make sure it is functioning. One clue to make sure the K-bus is working is if the turn signal indicators on the instrument cluster are working visually and audibly. If they aren't then you have a K-bus issue. The right side MFL buttons show only a blue wire going to it. Is that right? Try disconnecting either the left or right side button MFL connector and see if the function of the other returns. If the K-bus is not working properly then you have to remove components connected to the K-bus one by one until the function returns (like the instrument cluster, or radio, etc.) Hope this helps.
